THE VARANASI PROVINCE OF THE INDIAN MISSIONARY SOCIETY
The Varanasi Province of the Indian Missionary Society (VP of IMS) is a dedicated non-profit, non-governmental organization established on June 1, 1993. Its core mission is to foster humane communities grounded in values such as justice, equality, and fraternity, achieved through innovative outreach initiatives.
The VP of IMS consists of 85 priests and 3 evangelist brothers, who are serving at various stages community animation and social welfare activities. The organization operates in 8 states across India, managing 26 development centers and 18 substations within 12 dioceses. Its members are actively sought after for their contributions, particularly in the mission areas of North India.
In addition to supporting local communities, the Varanasi Province is committed to the social and economic development of marginalized populations. This includes empowering women and children, supporting individuals with disabilities, assisting rag pickers and slum dwellers, and advocating for the rights of Dalits. The organization focuses on education, health, skill development, and direct assistance, aiming to uplift these vulnerable groups and enhance their quality of life.
VP of IMS also actively promotes ecumenism and interfaith harmony, working to build bridges between diverse communities. Through dialogue and collaborative initiatives, the organization seeks to create a more inclusive and equitable society for all, promoting understanding and cooperation across various social and cultural backgrounds.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES OF THE VARANASI PROVINCE OF THE IMS
The Varanasi Province is engaged in a variety of people-oriented activities through its 22 development centers and formation houses across India, particularly in the northern regions. The major activities include:
Empowerment of Marginalized Groups: Focused efforts to empower marginalized populations, including tribal communities, Dalits, women, children, and differently-abled individuals, through awareness programs, education, and income generation initiatives.
Education for the Underprivileged: Providing both formal and non-formal education to poor and marginalized individuals to enhance their learning opportunities.
Rescue and Rehabilitation: Assisting vulnerable children found in slums, railway stations, and on the streets through rescue operations and rehabilitation services.
Support for Workers: Empowering domestic and migrant workers through education, motivation, and income generation programs to improve their livelihoods.
Community-Based Rehabilitation: Implementing rehabilitation programs for differently-abled children and adults to support their integration and well-being.
Legal Support: Offering legal assistance to combat exploitation, particularly focusing on the rights of women and children.
Dialogue and Peace Building: Facilitating inter-community dialogue and initiatives aimed at fostering peace and understanding among diverse groups.
Health and Hygiene Promotion: Promoting health and hygiene through natural and holistic health projects to improve community well-being.
Support for Slum Children and Rag Pickers: Providing education and rehabilitation services specifically tailored for children living in slums and those engaged in rag picking.
Motivational Outreach: Raising awareness through low-cost communication methods, including street theater, to engage and inform communities.
Community Empowerment: Fostering the formation of local organizations and promoting self-governance to empower communities.
Environmental Protection: Engaging in environmental education, seminars, and initiatives such as tree planting to promote sustainability and ecological awareness.
